What is a good homepage meta description?
The homepage meta description is the one meta description that gets the most eyeballs on your site, because the homepage ranks for branded searches and gets clicked by people who already know your name. Most homepage descriptions waste that traffic by being generic marketing fluff. A good one does three concrete things in 155 characters or less.
- States what the product or company actually does, not just a vague promise.
- Identifies who it is for, so the reader knows in one second if they are the right fit.
- Names the main benefit in plain language, not marketing language.
A formula that works: [What the product is] for [who it is for] that [what it does better than the alternative]. [Call to action verb]. Applied to a real example: "Ubenie is an AI content engine for founders and small marketing teams that publishes SEO-optimized articles on autopilot. Start free in 2 minutes."
What to avoid: "Welcome to our website" (zero information), "The leading provider of cutting-edge solutions" (marketing slop), and anything over 155 characters (gets truncated). Your homepage description is a 5-second elevator pitch. Treat it like one.
